Peacemakers for Albinim and Community (PAC) is dedicated to reducing stigma and discrimination against and improving the health, education, and livelihoods of people with albinism in Tanzania. We care for persons with albinism (PWAs), their families, and the broader community by sharing the love of God.
People in Tanzania living with albinism face significant social, economic, and physical challenges. The condition is highly discriminated against due to long-held superstition, leading to economic marginalization and social rejection that leads to harmful mental and physical health outcomes. In 2006, a myth arose that claimed that albino body parts could be used by witch doctors to make you get rich quickly. Since then, almost 100 persons with albinism have been killed, and countless more attacked in the name of this myth. While the government has cracked-down on this practice, there is still a significant threat to people living with albinism in Tanzania.
Peacemakers for Albinism and Community (PAC) utilizes safe education, community education, skin cancer prevention, and economic development programs to reduce stigma, promote inclusion, and heal wounds in our community. Through holistic, inclusive, and informed care, these programs tackle the root causes of discrimination and fear towards persons with albinism. PAC partners with a variety of local and international organizations concerned with the safety of this group. One of these relationships has led to a sponsorship program that cares for the educational, physical, and spiritual needs of local children with albinism.
